Musicals? |
Lead | |
|
Other than Grease, I never really gave a shit about musicals until recently. One of my co-workers kept bugging me about watching High School Musical like a
year ago, and now I have all three on DVD. I picked up Hairspray the other day, too, and I thought it was awesome. So does anyone have any recommendations, or
am I the only one here fruity enough to get into some good wholesome singing and dancing fun?

Joe.... try Damn Yankees... a baseball musical from teh 50s. It's sort of a Faustian story revolving around a guy who makes a deal with the devil to become
younger again so he can play for the Washington Senators and beat "those damn Yankees". Pretty good stuff... you've probablye ven heard a lot of
the songs before ("Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets", "You gotta have heart", "You gotta think about the game") in commercials and
stuff on TV.
Bless you, Ants. Blants.

The Hairspray remake was really good. Grease is good too (everyone likes that). Other then those though, I don't enjoy many. Saw West Side Story and
utterly hated it. High School Musical 3 (or maybe 2) was forced upon me and I hated that too.
Cannibal! The Musical is a treat. |

When I was a teen, I wasn't partial to musicals. They seemed too fruity and gay! I've become tolerant of them after watching some of the lesser Hong
Kong ones like Hong Kong Rhapsody(1968). Singing in the Rain(1953), Oklahoma(1954) and An American in Paris(1951) are superb. Fred Astaire's Top Hat(1933)
was one of Hollywood's first. Grease(1978) is good...Grease is the word, it's the word! High School Musical is a Grease rip off produced for the
Ipod/internet generation, but it's okay. I guess the Great Hollywood Musical genre must've shown its tired blood by the 1970's.
There was a lot of ex-Vaudeville stars that worked in musicals and that's what made them so great. Today's musicals(Dreamgirls, HSM, Moulin Rouge) just aren't the same. |

Grease and Hairspray were quite good. All of the HSM films are painful to sit through. Moulin Rouge wasn't bad - you should try that.

I picked up a bunch of musicals today, but the only one I've watched so far was Mamma Mia, which was pretty much mediocre. I also got Chicago, Moulin
Rouge, Newsies, Enchanted, and Grease, which I've seen a million times.

I'm with Owl. Grease and Hairspray were fun. I saw Hairspray on Broadway a few months ago with Harvey Fierstein in the Divine/John Travolta role (no,
I'm not gay but feel free to make fun). The live show was good too. I also liked Chicago. Enchanted wasn't really good but I have been to numerous
spots in NYC where thet filmed so it was cool as a travelogue. mamma Mia was interminable. It was torture.
I have also enjoyed: Mary Poppins A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory West Side Story All that Jazz The Muppet Movie The Blues Brothers Popeye Pennies from Heaven Annie The Muppets Take Manhattan Little Shop of Horrors (also saw this on Broadway years ago) School Daze Everyone Says I Love You (one of my favorite Woody Allen films) South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut The Producers (original and remake) Dreamgirls Sweeny Todd Walk Hard
'Only stupid people think that the Police are stupid.' XXXX - Layer Cake

Oh yeah...I was once subjected to The Sound of Music. That was bloody awful.

Okay, so I've watched a bunch in the last few days.
Chicago and Moulin Rouge: I thought they were pretty good. They both seem to be the type of movie to grow on me. Dreamgirls: Good movie, great music and singing. Jennifer Hudson doing "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" was the highlight for me. Enchanted: Not enough singing and dancing for me to consider it a musical. I liked it, though. Simple story done in a fun way. Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical: Hilarious and highly recommended. Newsies: I have yet to see a Christian Bale movie I don't like. I picked up Sweeney Todd and Romeo + Juliet, but haven't watched either yet. I saw Romeo + Juliet a long time ago, but I barely remember any of it, and I'm looking at musicals through a different set of eyes these days.

I was watching Flower Drum Song today. It's a Hollywood film version of a Rodgers and Hammerstein play/musical based on the book by C.Y. Lee. It stars
Nancy Kwan(The World of Suzy Wong, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) and James Shigeta(Die Hard, Drive). It's too bad it was very unsuccessful when it was
released in 1961; it's fun and charming...and ahead of its time. Most Hollywood movies don't feature a cast made up mostly of Asian people.
One can see its influence on Hong Kong Nocturne, Hong Kong Rhapsody, Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, etc. FDS was directed by Henry Koster(director of Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation)and the music score was written by the late Alfred Newman. When I first saw Airport(1970), I hit the rewind button on my remote control three times so I could hear the main title(bup bup bup bup bup bup bup butabatabump bup ba ba ba...). BTW, Nancy Kwan was hotter than July...in her prime! |

I've watched Repo: The Genetic Opera twice now, and it
was good the first time, but being familiar with the music made it better the second. Even Paris Hilton didn't bring the movie down at all. Cool
comic-style cutscenes, some really good singing (especially from Anthony Head and Sarah Brightman), and some pretty catchy songs. It's really not a movie
for anyone, but if you're feeling adventurous, give it a try. Just be aware that like 95% of the dialogue is sung.
I'm currently waiting for my Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog DVD from Amazon. I watched the first half of the first episode on Youtube, and it was hilarious. I also blindly ordered copies of Get Over It and Love's Labour's Lost. I have no idea if I'll like them or not, but hey, it's only money. =D |
