Red Cliff 2- Just f'ing see both films. New classics and never dull. Almost perfect. 9.5/10To address your concerns more specifically, I kept forgetting that I was watching something that was directed by John Woo. It didn't feel like a John Woo movie (whether his classic HK or newer Hollywood shit), and it had a different vibe from modern Hollywood "epics" (aside from the inevitable and obligatory love triangle BS, which wasn't all that bad in this film, really). The only possible downside: if you're just watching the first one, you may feel a little unsatisfied as it leaves you feeling as though you HAVE to watch the second one.
I really don't understand people that are anti-foreign film, so I can't say if your friend will like it. It's a satisfying epic that feels very polished, but if your friend hates any film that is "foreign"... well, what can I say? The film is foreign, ultimately, so there's a good chance he'll hate this one as well, no matter how worthwhile it may be. What does he hate about foreign films? Is he one of those "Ah, fuck... I've gotta read the dialogue in this movie" people, or does he find foreign cultures goofy and/or hard to understand, or is he just spoiled by Hollywood production values? If it's the latter, "Red Cliff" is a very polished production and he shouldn't have an issue with it.
