The Five Venoms - haven't watched this for ages, checked out the new Dragon Dynasty DVD tonight. Still holds up really well, but I was kind of struck by just how little actual fighting there is in it. Much more of a straight drama, but a good one.

Hong Kong History X - okay "young Triad" movie. Better than the other Kenneth Lau movies I've seen, but that isn't saying much. And to
quote the long-gone WoodyInvincible, I want to bone Yoyo Mung.

Godzilla: Final Wars... first asian movie I've watched in AGES. It was goofy as shit, but fun. Nice seeing Tak Sakaguchi in it, even if he didn't say a
word.
Bless you, Ants. Blants.

I Five Venoms, is to me not quite as good as say Crippled Avengers,Fist Of The White Lotus,36th Chamber Of Shaolin and King Boxer because as you mentioned, you
can't deny though the quality, the training montages and in fact the bad ass presence of the scorpion fighter wasn't awesome. It also inspired Mortal
Kombat.
I saw Return Of The Master Killer, Which I was Amazed hadn't been reviewed, likewise it was decent but not up to the original, It was more a remake than a direct sequel and call me a motherfucker but I for one just can't by Gordon Liu as a guy who has absoluately no martial arts skill, I can buy him having the skills and then training to be way better, but the whole goofball that knows nothing and becomes a bad kung fu expert (What Jackie Chan perfected) I just can't see Liu in that role. Maybe it's cause I always see him as serious and monk-like. I watched Rage Of The Masters-I'm often amazed when I hear how Jimmy Wang Yu had not martial arts experience prior to his kung fu movies, the bastard looks way better and formidable than a lot of so called champions who make movies, like Chuck Norris. In anycase the movie was decent time killer, the fight sequences were good, though I for the life of me didn't understand why Jimmy Wang Yu's character was such a mama's boy, when his mother dies, he goes and wipes out a bunch of people and even decapitates a couple as well as stabbing people hundreds of time. Wang Yu might be a bad guy in real life, but he can fight and act. Return Of The Fist Of Fury- Fist Of Fury III (also called Return Of The Fist Of Fury, go figure.) was actually pretty decent, easily the best in fist of fury series, but for the worst look no further. The headliner is Bruce Pak (A Korean Bruce Lee clone? What was Dragon Lee booked?) this literally has no plot, no connection with the others and in fact it's just a guy kicking ass in sloppily staged action sequences. There is also the evil Japanese but these guys are wusses. Bruce Lee and Bruce Li would've laughed at them and then made them their bitches. |

Nowhere to Hide - tried to watch this about a year ago on IFC, couldn't get through the whole thing. Rented it the other night and managed to watch the
whole movie but I was still pretty underwhelmed. Once you strip aside the camera trickery, it's a very average cops and robbers picture IMO.
A Postman in Shangri-La - pretty much the opposite of what I usually watch, this is a story about a rural postman. Nothing much really happens but I still liked it. A good movie for a lazy afternoon when you're vegging out. Hero of the Wild - solid old-school movie with some good fights directed by Corey Yuen and Yuen Biao, bolstered by a story that actually has some weight to it. |

Asian Cop: High Voltage - Donnie Yen stars in this shot in the Phillipines action cheapie. Some decent action scenes, but the camera tricks Donnie favored at
this point in his career kind of hurt them.
Mr. Vampire 2 - Wanna see annoying kid actors? Then check this out. Lam Ching-Ying, Yuen Biao, and Moon Lee are totally misused and wasted in this snoozer. |

Bruce Lee: The Man, The Myth - not bad for Bruceploitation, though there's some silly plot elements like Bruce having to fight karate-trained Mafia members
to get permission to shoot Way of the Drgaon in Rome. Bruce Li was one of the better Lee clones, and at least Lee's philosophy is treated with some
respect, and there's some decent fight scenes.
Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave - this is the opposite end of the spectrum. The opening 30 seconds, where some white guy badly disguised as Bruce hops out form his "grave" is the best part of the movie. Horrid from beginning to finish. I'm surprised I got through the whole thing. Angry Tiger (aka Spirit of Bruce Lee) - another horrid Bruceploitation flick, made only slightly better than Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave because of Michael Chan. The Hellfire Angel - pretty good late 70's female-centered Golden Harvest crime drama. The lead, Ma Man-Ngai, is quite a good actor and very easy on the eyes. Triangle - I liked this, even though the three directors' styles don't quite mesh together. Lam Suet as a dealer hopped up on X was fun to watch. Kung Fu Chefs - another recent half-ass effort from Sammo. Does he owe money to some Mainland loan sharks? Why does he keep doing there low-budget productions? Ninja in the Deadly Trap - fun movie starring most of the Venoms, with Phillip Kwok handling the directing. If you liked Chinese Super Ninjas, you'll dig this one. I Corrupt All Cops - Wong Jing makes a serious crime drama and does a good job with it. |

I wasn't the first, but COF just uploaded by Ong Bak 2 review.
Oh, and it's only Asian-related, but my Black Dynamite review's now up, too. Something Awful also didn't like OB2.

Thousand Mile Escort - crap old-school movie, notable only for ripping off the Lone Wolf and Cub series.

Recently signed up for Netflix to take advantage of the new PS3 streaming service. They actually have quite a few HK/Asian movies compared to a couple of
years ago, and for the disc rentals, the turnaround is really quick since they have a distribution center here in Minneapolis. The video/audio quality on the
streaming movies is actually very good - though it is kind of annoying that they seem to always go for the Mandarin soundtrack, even for HK movies. But
anyway, it's a relatively cheap way to get access to a lot of movies.
China Heat - decent girls-with-guns action with Sibelle Hu kicking ass in "New York City" (actually looks to be Vancouver). Low budget as hell, but some fun scenes. Kingdom of Mob - fucking awful. Ivan Lai credits himself as "The King". I wanted to punch him in his crown jewels after sitting through this shit. Tracing Shadow - this wuxia/comedy co-directed by Francis Ng went straight to video but it's surprisingly good. Not anything great, but it's a HK comedy that didn't make me want to puncture my eardrums with an icepick. Kung Fu Fighter - boring modern MA pic that brings in the good fight scenes too late for anyone to care. |

The Tricky Master - okay Wong Jing/Stephen Chow movie. Nick Cheung is annoying as fuck, but you get to see Kelly Lin in a bra twice.
My School Mate, the Barbarian - the video game tie-in is cheesy, but this is overall a good action/comedy starring Nic Tse and Stephen Fung in "Fight Club: High School Kidz". Hong Kong Pie - fucking awful. ugh. Musa - enjoyed this quite a bit. Liked the good and bloody action scenes. Red River - a romantic movie I actually liked. Nick Cheung redeems himself. The Underdog Knight - fun combo of a kung fu picture and heist movie. Anthony Wong is really good in this. A Touch of Zen - never watched this before - liked it a lot. Very long (over 3 hours) though. Millennium Dragon - bottom of the barrel Phillip Ko garbage. Why the fuck was Yuen Biao in this? |
