Just watched No Compromise, a movie in which Danny Lee shockingly plays a cop

Note how sly Neil is in completely bypassing my obvious (and drunken) attempt to get him to watch the martial arts movie with the greatest (American) fight sequences ever filmed.
Saw For Your Height Only with Weng Weng, pretty lame as expected from a movie about a secret agent midget. Even drunk it was pretty dumb. Also Weng Weng has some freakishly big nipples. It's enough to scare the shit outta me. The Man With Secret Kung Fu- An obscure movie bought for a buck. (God bless Wal-Mart!) and it has a pretty kick ass score, some fun fight sequences but basically it's about on par with a Bruce Li cheapie. Now that's a good or bad thing depending on your taste. 3 Extremes-Not nearly as disturbing or as shocking as people suggested. Weird and watchable but a letdown, Miike's segment was especially disappointing because for the first time ever I couldn't figure out when his story was going. The best segment was Cut, which was great. Dumplings was a one note premise that wasn't very surprising once you figured that women eat aborted babies to stop aging. An overall interesting but not nearly as gross or mean as people say. Karate Bullfighter- A great Sonny Chiba film. Sonny Chiba is a bad ass, Indeed. Not as cool as Street Fighter but far better than Iron Eagle III and Immortal Combat (Not saying much) But this movie had great fight sequences and the one on one with a mad bull is really cool. Karate Bearfighter- Almost as good as Bull, only though it felt not as fresh and the fight sequences weren't as good. Indeed neither were the villains and the plot was crowded. Once again though fun times and the bear fight sequence is fun. I would recommend it. Though the original is an easy 9, where this one is a 6.5-7 Karate Fighters- This Sonny Chiba flick is on par with Bruce Li and Bruce Le, it has some good action and Chiba as usual is supercool. (Seriously is there anyone cooler than Chiba?) The plot was too mediocre and there was an annoying kid. Saw this on the grindhouse DVD. Haven't seen Dragon Princess but it looks terrible. Chinese Super Ninjas- I finally (FINALLY) got around to seeing this (I may have already mentioned this one time but it bears repeating) and this movie kicks serious ass. I now know what MPM and gZa were talking about. The ninja getting ripped apart is great. The fights are even better and best of all is that it is one of the most entertaining ninja movies ever made. Master Of The Flying Guillotine- Excellent movie with kick ass theme and great fighting. (See post) easily the best movie i've seen awhile. (Which says something cause Chinese Super Ninja and Karate Bullfighter are no slouches) Clones Of Bruce Lee- Here is where the bubble bursts. This movie is terrible even for guys like me, what with a nonsensical plot, endless filler with Bruce Lee clones stopping drug dealers and one of the lousiest climaxes ever. The only redeeming quality? The doctor has two hot assistants. The Protector- Was so-so on this Tony Jaa movie. On one hand it does have excellent fight sequences, on the other hand the whole elephant plot is ridiculous and similar to Ong Bak. Still a relatively decent time. Bloodfight-Here is a real step down in class. Bolo Yeung in what in what is essentially a Bloodsport rip off, with him fighting some Japanese unknown martial artist who avenges Simon Yam. Contains some of the worst acting you're sure to find. The bad ass dude with shades is the worst offender. My Lucky Stars- A pretty decent movie, though Jackie is barely in it, the chick is hot, some of the humor is corny but it's far better than most of Chan's American work. And way better than The Cannonball Run movies that inspired it. (Cannonball Run is one of the worst movies ever made, it's sequel is awful though not as awful.) And that's pretty much it. Wow. |

Long Arm Of The Law 3 - 8/10 - the worst in the trilogy story-wise but action (courtesy of Tony Leung Siu Hung) make it the best in terms of action.

Tony Leung Siu-Hung is a solid action director... even his US B-movies are surprisingly decent.
Watched Extreme Crisis (directed by Bruce Law, another good action director) last night, which was pretty fun despite the lead (Julian Cheung) having all the personality of driftwood. |

The Owl vs Bumbo - 8.5/10 - a great action comedy where Sammo gets to do his stuff both action and comedy-wise. something else that was very interesting for me was Sammo's take on youth problems; where youth are portrayed as individuals having social problems like finding jobs, contributing to society, and also showed them living in a world where they have their own rules, experiences and overall values that in general separates that world from the upper class. even if it's just a subplot, I felt it added a nice touch and certainly makes the movie-watching more than just being entertained by certain departments.
Overall, I liked the movie and consider this one of Sammo's best he has done. |

Flashpoint - 8/10 - Decent film with decent action and fighting. If Donnie Yen really takes this whole mixed martial arts in movies idea forward, he can count me in as a paying customer. MMA is just furious fighting that eschews the ballet approach of most other movies.
Drunken Monkey - 2/10 - Stupid movie that doesn't bode well for future SB brand releases. Invisible Target - 7/10 - Okay movie. Nic Tse makes me want to hit the gym again - I don't know when he started looking that cut. |

Bullets Over Summer - 9/10 - action comedy that goes deep into characterization bizarrely but brilliantly. Francis Ng does one of his best works, as does Wilson Yip directing stylishly and innovatively, making the movie one of the more interesting HK pieces of the late 90s.

Nic Tse's always been in pretty good shape, but I didn't recognize him at first in that movie. I don't follow the HK gossip sites/blogs, but there must be some new starlet he wants to impress
I watched these last night - Bare Footed Kid: Ti Lung and Maggie Cheung do some good work, but the movie is undermined by Aaron Kwok. Overall I didn't care for it much, but there seem to be a lot of people out there that would disagree. Dreams of Glory: A very good movie about young kickboxers. More drama than fighting, but the acting is solid, so that's okay. Hampered by an abrupt ending that offers really no resolution. |

Have been on a tear lately....still in search of a life outside of work...
Dragon Tiger Gate- I'm not one for comic book-type films but this was passable. Shawn Yue's hair was ridiculous. 6/10 Koma- Law Chi-leung makes an exceptional horror film. One of the best i've seen in some time. Karena Lam is now my favorite HK actress and Angelica Lee is climbing the ladder as well. 9/10 Love, Guns, and Glass- Entertaining old-school actioner with Simon Yam, Roy Cheung, and Cecilia Yip. Has it's moments but it's ultimately unmemorable. 6.5/10 The Park- One of the biggest pieces of shit i have ever seen. Andrew Lau directs this god-awful 3D movie and robs me of an hour and a half of life. The 3D is so fucking miserable....i still have no clue why it was made in 3D. At least i have a cool pair of 3D glasses now. 0/10 People's Hero- One of the best 80's HK films i have ever had the pleasure of watching. It's HK's riff on Dog Day Afternoon and it's almost perfect. More drama than action but definately not a bad thing. Ti Lung and Leung Chiu-wai are incredible. A definate must see. 9/10 Seven Swords- Over long and boring Tsui Hark epic. Liked Michael Wong's mustache though. Thought Lau Kar-leung was dead??? 3/10 Shiver- Francis Ng, Nick Cheung, and the always nice to look at Athena Chu star in a Japanese-Horror rip off that is uneventful and tedious. Skip it. Billy Chung is a hack director. Every now and then he has flashes of intelligence but those times are few and far between. 4/10 Scarred Memory- Simon Yam and Veronica Yip star in this entertaining triad drama that started off with a bang but fell off the radar soon after. Directed Raymond Leung has a flare for the dramatic and has alot of style to burn (see review of his Day Off) if only he could fuse the two into a better film. Not bad really, but not that good either. 6/10 Undercover- Hack Billy Chung directs a shot on DV waste of time starring Shawn Yue. It's a familiar story that has been told better before. The DV seems to remind me of a Michael Mann film (Miami Vice, Collateral) but Chung and Mann should rarely, if ever, be spoken in the same breath. 3/10 A Dancing Boy in Underworld Street- Shing Fui-on and Dick Wei are the mentionable names in this ridiculous early 90's triad flick. I'm still unsure who the 'dancing boy' is and where 'underworld street' is. There is some nice nudity, however. 3.5/10 Killer's Love-Jamie Luk directs Simon Yam and Carol Cheng in this odd action comedy that was in flavor back in the hey day. Killers Love is only mildly succesful and the leads charm keep the film intersting and fun enough. Made back when Jamie Luk mattered in HK cinema. Now.....not so much. 6.5/10 Coolie Killer- Charlie Chin stars as a gangster being tailed by the cops and the triads in this wild new wave action drama from director Terry Tong. One of Cecilia Yip's early efforts and....for those who care.....she shows some boobies. Skin aside, this is definately worth checking out if you are HK cinema nerd. Danny Lee makes a brief appearance too. 7.5/10 Help- Johhnie To and Wai Ka-fai collaborate, again, on a very entertaining comedy that sometimes plays like a musical. Jordan Chan, Ekin Chen, Cecilia Cheung, and Lam Suet are uniformally excellent in an over the top comedy that seems to be missing Stephen Chiau. It's his type of comedy. 7.5/10 Wonton Love- Totally unwatchable, well....except for the soft core parts. Ben Ng, Elvis Tsui, Kwan Hoi-san, and Chan Wai-man must have been living underneath a freeway and needed some money for their cat food dinners. Embarrasing to watch.....except for the soft core parts. 0/10 Days of Being Dumb- Very enjoyable silly comedy that employs the talents of Leung Chiu-wai and Jacky Cheung perfectly. The two are very watchable together and very funny. Good stuff. 8/10 Gun N' Rose- Clarence Fok is hit and miss. He usually either hit's entirely (Iceman Cometh, Dragon from Russia, Naked Killer) or misses embarrasingly (They Came to Rob HK, Black Panther Warriors). Here he is oddly somewhere in between. Film starts off amazingly with over the top action scenes very esoterically Hong Kong. Then it spirals a bit downward adding stupid comedy into the mix. The stars, Andy Lau, Simon Yam, Alan Tang, Carrie Ng, Loletta Lee, Carrie Ng, Chan Wai-man, and Leon Lai keep it above par. The action makes this film worth seeking out. 6.5/10 Thank You. Come Again. City of Violence - Silly but entertaining Korean gangster film. Draws a slight comparison to Kill Bill with its smugness and over-the-top action scenes (ie. the breakdancing/baseball/hockey/schoolgirl gangs chasing the protagonists). The climax at the restaurant was a fun time. 8/10

Curse Of The Golden Flower - 9/10 - having low expectations and thinking it was yet another clichd piece in the now trendy genre, I was surprised that it was excellent in many ways. great use of colors, music and imagery making everything lively and spiritual and the mood kept in the right way, as always with Zimou's movies. as far as acting goes, the big surprise was none other than Chow Yun Fat, who has never looked this great for years and it was just refreshing to see him in a home-produced movie again after so many years. the other actors were good as well. the action here is sparse (not that impressive) until it reaches the 2nd half of the movie where things begin to pick up, and for the most part I thought it was very good, with good weapons and wirework by Ching Siu Tung who does a great job with his thing (yes, it was good and not annoying for once). intriguing, emotional, beautiful and violent, CotGF is a movie worth watching.
The Untold Story - 8/10 - movie apparently based on a true event about a restaurant owner who murdered customers and made meat pies out of them. Anthony Wong makes a terrific performance and the horrifying/scary parts deliver with maximum effect (with LOTS of violence in form of body parts being cut of and Wong using various murder weapons!!!), if only Herman Yau could've toned down the violence in some of the scenes because they are very graphic and quite disturbing too (one scene shows Wong murdering a family, including kids!!!) but sadly this movie is also scripted sloppily, with dumb cops fooling around all the time and can't seem to handle one single murderer with bare hands (despite their built) unless grouped with others. the cops themselves are portrayed totally different from what you see otherwise in HK movies and that was interesting, until the movie explores their method of getting evidence out of suspects: either beating them up on the interrogation room or letting prisoners beat them up badly which was too cheap to be believeable (illegal acts like that wouldn't go away just like nothing happened). Overall this is one movie that has a great shocking value but otherwise wasn't executed too well mostly. of course on a technical aspect, go watch it if you want entertainment! |

People's Hero - solid Derek Yee drama about a young kid (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) who runs into a real criminal (Ti Lung) while trying to rob a bank. Nothing flashy (it's actually really low-budget), but it did a good job in creating some nice fleshed-out characters in only 80 minutes.
Eye in the Sky - Simon Yam stars as a cop pursuing a robbing crew led by Tony Leung Ka-Fai. It comes off as Johnnie To lite, which is not really surprising, since the director helped write a couple of dozen Milkyway movies. The characters are a bit under-developed, and the ending is totally improbable, but otherwise this was a decent movie. |

With or Without You- Taylor Wong (Tragic Hero, Sentenced to Hang) directs a cheesy action thriller With some hammy acting by Jacky Cheung. Leon Lai, Ng Man tat, and the always watchable Rosamund Kwan also star. No More Love, No More Death is supposed to be the prequel. Both stink. 4/10
Horoscope 1: The Voice From Hell- Chin Kar lok, Athena Chu, and Pinky Cheung go slumming in hack director Steve "Bio-Cops" Cheng's silly horror/comedy. Skip this and watch the sequel. 3.5/10 Horoscope 2: The Woman From Hell- Craptacular director Steve Cheng crafts his masterpiece with this campy and entertaining film. Simon Yam hams it up big time, Sophi Ngan shows some skin, and Tony Ho has some freaky black magic powers. This is great cheese. Pleasantly surprised. 7/10 Headlines- Not to be confused with the far superior A-1 Headlines, this is a poor attempt to purport the tribulations of being a newspaper reporter in HK. Emil Chau, Daniel Wu, and Maggie Cheung Ho yee each have stories that run concurent with each other....but they are all uninvolving. Ho-hum. 4.5/10 Roaring Wheels- Entertaining film directed by Aman Chang (Fist Power, Body Weapon) involving illegal motorcycle racing. Dave Wong plays the "Racing God". After his girl dies giving birth he retires to a seaside resort to live out his days with loved ones......until an old adversary comes to challenge his "Racing God" title. Yeah, it sounds like garbage but it ended up being a good time waster. And seeing Maggie Siu 'jiggle' in a blue bikini while riding a bicycle was worth the watch alone. Karen Mok also stars. 6/10 Hong Kong Show Girl- Elvis Tsui is a triad-producer of a Las Vegas type show. Suen Hing plays one of his followers who falls in love with the shows star. Trouble is, Elvis is banging her on the side. you can see where this garbage action-drama is going. For the most part this film blows....but there are 1 or 2 pretty sweet action scenes. The finale is stellar. 4.5/10 Weakness of Man- Holy shit......speechless...i.....um....holy shit....This was one of the worst fucking movies i have ever sat through and i have sat through many a Kenneth Lau film (see next review). Cecilia Yip and Carrie Ng inexplicably star in this god-fucking-awful 'sex' comedy. Avoid at all costs. And if you have seen this film....keep it to yourself. -10/10 Wan Chai Empress- AKA Wan Chai Express....but it really doesnt matter what you call this film. All you need to know is that it's directed by THEE absolute worst director to ever direct a movie. Kenneth "shithouse" Lau. He has given the world such gems like:X-Imp, Hong Kong Spice Gals, Life, HK History X, HK History Y, and Bloody Cops. He even manages to make some b-movie all-stars- Wayne Lai, Simon Lui, Lee Siu Kei, Sam Lee, Diana Pang, and everyone's favorite...Michael Wong- look worse than they usually do. Actually, I do like Wayne Lai, but here he overacts as an ostentatious homosexual. ARGH! I Fucking hate Kenneth Lau. 0/10 Flashpoint- Swift and exciting actioner deserves wide release and very high praise. Thoroughly enjoyable. The action is the best i have seen and actually made me gasp......i was like a fucking giddy school girl. Plus, anything that co-stars Kent Cheng kicks ass in my book. I love the rotund bastard. I have said once before, and i will say it again...i'm not gay but...damn....i wish i had a physique like Donnie Yen. All involved should be applauded. It's all style and action over substance but very effective. The credit outakes and training sequences are great too. 9/10 'Only stupid people think that the Police are stupid.' XXXX - Layer Cake

Time - By Kim Ki-Duk... started out interesting enough. And at least there are no characters that don't speak. But then it just got a bit insane. It's about a woman who is jealous of her boyfriend always looking at other women, so she has plastic surgery to change her appearance and pretends to be another woman 6 months later. Essentially, it turned into Michael Jackson's wet dream. There was even a scene where she walks back into the plastic surgeon's office wearing a mask of a picture of her old face, and it was all pale, and looked just like MJ. Freaky. He's turned from a black man into a petite asian woman? Plus, the characters always head to the same coffee shop and have massive fights there... how can the owners not forbid them from ever coming back? Weird. First hour: 7/10, Movie as a whole: 5/10
Bless you, Ants. Blants.

Really Alvin!? really!? Wow... man... that's amazing. You actually watched a whole movie!? From beginning to end!? How was that for ya? Did you like it? was it entertaining? Did it give you stuff to think about!? What about the music? What about the cinematography? What about the acting? Did you fall asleep while watching it? Did you picture Tony Leung in a wetsuit while you were masturbating over the old bald guy? Instead of whispering into that hole in the wall, would YOU have stuck your tiny smurfy spotty dick in it, cause that's something you'd want to keep for yourself forever!?

The Association - a kung fu flick mixed with a heavy dose of exploitation (lots of nudity and a few sex scenes). This was actually pretty good - the action bits (helmed by Sammo Hung) are done well.
Love, Guns, and Glass - standard "Triad tries to go straight" movie starrring Simon Yam. Pretty unremarkable besides a couple of solid gunfights directed by Phillip Kwok. Against All - usual Magnum movie fare with Danny Lee as the tough but fair cop trying to help his nephew (Nick Cheung), who has run afoul of the local gang. Starts out extremely slow (there's a musical montage and two singing scenes in the first 15 minutes) but picks up near the end via some good action work from Stephen Tung. |

Fist of Fury 1991 - certainly not Stephen Chow's best work, but there are some funny bits, most notably a good parody of the A Better Tomorrow movies.
Deadly Strike - decent Bruceploitation flick starring Bruce Li (even though Bruce Le is the guy on the cover). Gun is Law - standard cop pot-boiler, with Phillip Chan replacing Danny Lee in the hot-headed cop role. |
