The Good:
Home Sweet Home- Pretty good horror flick from Soi Cheang with a brave performance from Karena Lam.
Her Vengeance-Sweet heyday Cat III flick with Pauline Wong, Lam Ching Ying and Shing Fui On.
A Mob Story- A gem in the glut of recent Hong Kong cinema garbage. You can usually rely on Herman Yau for a goodie....this is one of them. One of the best HK films in the past few years. A bit pretensious but who cares.
Showdown at The Cottonmill- Excellent old school flick, alas, there was no Cottonmill? But quite a good showdown,
The Teahouse- Classic Shaw Bros. film mixing social comment and a bit of comedy. Very enjoyable.
The Bad:
Along comes the Tiger- Poor old school film released by Rarescope.
The Face Behind the Mask- See above.
The Wall- A rare blemish on Marco Mak's filmmaking career.....crap!
And the Rest:
Confession of Pain- Dissapointing crime drama that wastes Shu Qi and forces Takeshi Kaneshiro to overact. Nice to see Leung Chiu-wai in a different light though.
Choi Lee Fut Kung Fu- Rarescope release. No big deal.
July 13- Fun and satisfying horror film.
Nightmares in Precinct 7- Herman Yau....reliable.
Man Wanted 2 a.k.a Those Were the Days- Odd mix of triad drama and ghost story. Doesn't really work but i'm a sucker for all things esoterically Hong Kong. Sequel to Man Wanted in name only.
Man Wanted 3- The end of the unrelated 'Mongkok Sky' trilogy. Not bad, but Simon Yam is in it and Danny Lee makes a very brief cameo.
Lethal Angels- Not very good attempt at recapturing the cat III film glory of the early 90's....actually it was a very poor attempt. Diverting, with some t&a, but forgettable.
I know i have way too much time on my hands. Asian cinema has seen it's better days so i'm relying on older films to get me through.
So, what are you guys watching these days? Anything good?
